Being the groom's right hand man, the best man has many best man duties and responsibilities. He should be a dependable and trustworthy person. Your best man will be the one person, through out the entire wedding planning process, to help you when ever you need it. Here you will find a list of the traditional best man duties.
General Best Man duties and responsibilities
- To plan and organize the bachelor party.
- To make sure that all the groomsmen have the proper wedding attire and have been for all their fittings.
- Collect and return all the groomsmen's formal wear rentals after the wedding day.
- Be at all the pre wedding parties including the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.
- Help the groom to get dressed on the day of the wedding.
- The best man needs to distribute and be sure that the entire male wedding party are wearing their buttonhole corsages.
Church Best Man Duties and Responsibilities
- Payment of the pastor's fee. Arrangements need to be made as to pay one of the clergy members or the pastor himself before or after the ceremony.
- Organize that the ushers arrive before the guests do before the ceremony.
- Goes over the ushers duties with them on the actual day of the wedding.
- Stands slightly behind the groom to his left, in the actual wedding ceremony.
- There can't be a wedding without the rings. The most important best man duties and responsibilities includes not forgetting the wedding rings.
- He will sign the wedding register as a witness.
- Your best man will walk out of the church accompanied by the maid or matron of honor.
- Help the bridal couple inside the car after the wedding ceremony.
Reception Best Man Duties and Responsibilities
- If there is no hired driver, then the best man will drive the couple to the reception.
- Manage and organize the ushers so that the guests are seated properly.
- Make introductions and mingle with the guests at the reception. (Your best man is not usually part of the receiving line)
- Your best man proposes the first toast to you, the newly wed couple, and to the bridesmaids.
- Accompanies the maid of honor to the dance floor and dances with her.
- Makes sure that all the gifts are taken from the reception back to the couples home.
- Makes sure that all the honeymoon bags are ready and packed ready to go.
- Your best man can escort you and your bride to your car, where he can give you the keys, plane tickets and any thing else that was pre arranged for the honeymoon.
As you can see the best man needs to be a responsible person and preferably someone that you are close to. There are numerous best man duties and responsibilities to take care of, and it would help if your best man is comfortable speaking in front of people and socializing. But when it comes right down to it, this is one of the biggest days of your life, have someone there standing beside you that has been there for you and means something to you.
