Is the best man supposed to make a special "toast" at the rehersal dinner?

This is not for me. My friend is the best man in a wedding this Saturday and he is wondering if he was supposed to make a special "toast" at the rehersal dinner. Wow, no need to call me selfish since I am just helping a friend out.
Not usually. The best man gives a toast at the wedding reception and nowadays the maid of honor has the option of giving a toast at the rehearsal dinner or at the reception as well.
But to be sure, your friend should just ask the groom.
Do you plan on asking your maid of honor/ best man to give a speech? Are you going to bring it up?

My wedding coordinator needs a set time line and she needs to know if our two maid of honors and two best men are going to give a speech. I’m not sure if they planned on it or not, but I don’t want to put them on the spot by asking them. I would love for one or all of them to make a toast or give a speech…. just not sure if they feel comfortable enough or not.
How did your or how do you plan to handle this situation?
I know how awkward this might be- it seems to have to do with personalities. If you were the say-whatever-pops-in-your-head type of person, than this wouldn’t even be a question. So, odds are, you’re more like me- the type to care about how it would sound if you mentioned it and if it would be putting them "on the spot".
Really though, from an outsider perspective- there is nothing wrong with simply asking. With your MOH you can be light-hearted and random, and with the best man you could opt to pick on him a little…since the best man speech has become looked forward to as comedic relief tied in with man-love sentiment.
Say "a toast" if the word speech carries too much pressure.
oh- and from a planner’s perspective, she shouldn’t need the time frame of/for their speeches. Yes, toasts are typically given at a certain time but the planner is usually not involved in that. There is no need for a "time slot" during the dinner hour. So if she hasn’t been that specific- don’t worry about it. If she actually does need to know…than I’d tell her that you don’t feel comfortable cornering them like that…it’s not a public speaking event, it’s an intimate and cozy one that shouldn’t require by-minute timing to be a success. ; ) At smaller weddings I’ve had a lot of impromptu speeches/toasts given- but turned out to be very sweet or even hilarious.

Welcome everybody.
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Mike, I will be the best man tonight. My fiancée Erin and I came all the way from Kingston Ontario to be part of this special celebration, it is a great honor.
If you cant already tell, I haven’t had to read in front of a crowd since college, there I learnt to stand up, speak up and then shut up.
I searched best man speeches on the internet for ideas. It told me the best mans speech should be about as lengthy as the bride and grooms love making. With that said I would like to wish you all a good night.
Pete and I have known each other for 17 or 18 years now, I believe it was our strong interest in reptiles, amphibians, and fish that made our relationship so strong. Chatting on the phone like little school girls about what fish can be housed together and what bearded dragons can and cant eat, etc We have lived together several times in Ontario and here in BC. We have partied good and hard together, sometimes until the floor came up and smacked us in the face. I know Pete well. This is my one get out of jail free card. I get to poke fun at Pete and not get beat up for it. Hopefully.
Petes voice and presence definitely fills the room. At the same time he can clear the room in a matter of seconds. I have never met anyone that constantly passes gas with such enthusiasm and pride.
You know, Ive heard Pete talk a lot of many great things; vehicles hes gonna buy, jobs he thinks he landed, things he wants to buy. My response to many of these statements was Ill believe it when I see it Pete. It wasnt until a few months ago, that I actually heard talk of marriage. I knew he was serious, I didnt have to see it to believe it, and here it is.
Pete has always been known to be the life of the party; he is very distinguishable. He is known for having the voice of the wings of an angel. Hes an easy guy to find, and until now, a hard one to tame. My congratulation goes out to you Amy, as you have found the secret to tame the wild beast within Mr. Peter ODonovan.
I applaud you for having the will power to look past the cave man characteristics in Pete, the guy who probably still types with two fingers, and scratches his head and grunts in confusion while using the computer. Pete was pretty excited the first time he punched the monkey on the computer and thought he had won 50 bucks. He immediately asked me where do I get the money? I pointed to a slot on the computer tower. He took a closer look and said no way. I held my laughter in and there was a good long pause before Pete blurted out forget about the stupid monkey, grab a screw driver, lets open this thing up and see how much cash is in it

What an unlikely jackpot to hit, the two of you have so many things to be proud of. Mainly the loving family you have created for your children. Jordan Dylan, how lucky are you to now have each other, and better yet be role models for your younger brothers. You are all fortunate to have each other; it is a one in a million bond we all dream to achieve.
I wish you many years of happiness, and laughter, as you embark on this adventure of life together. Let us all lift our glasses, one more time for Mr. and Mrs. ODonovan.
