OK, OK, I know. This is an extremely wierd question. But I have a muslim freind whos parents are from abroad where people don’t even know what a best man and bridesmaid is. The brides situation is the same. So do you think it is possible to have a wedding without them. Have any of you actually gotten married without them? I don’t mean civil marriages, but marriages in which alot of people were there and there was no best man or bridesmaids. Answers would be great.

Absolutely! There are no "rules" when you get married. Just because you don’t have a best man or bridesmaids does not mean that you can’t have a lot of people there or anything like that.

What are his duties, what should he be prepped for?

To catch the groom if he faints… or to drag him back if he runs.

The best man plans the bachelor party (be sensitive of the bride if she doesn’t want strippers, please), and he also runs various errands either with the groom or in the groom’s place. He helps shuttle people around, such as airport pickups, etc. On the day, he’s there to help the groom and other groomsmen get ready, and just generally be available to groom (or sometimes the bride if she needs something fetched/found/bought/set up/taken down/etc). A REALLY good best man makes sure the groom eats something and drinks some water so he doesn’t pass out.

The best man holds the bride’s ring until he gives it to the groom during the ceremony. He might have a part in the ceremony rites, depending on how the ceremony is structure. Usually he just stands next to the groom. At the reception, he usually gives a toast. After the reception, he might play chauffeur to the bride and groom to their wedding suite, and later again be available to get people back to their airport. These last things are hardly required, but it’s nice if he offers.

My fiance wants to ask his nephew to be his best man, the only problem is he’s only 13. We were told that this is too young.

However we are having a pretty small wedding, and the best man won’t have the responsibilities like in a larger, more traditional wedding…

Also, my maid-of-honor is 22, so would it be weird for them to be walking together?

If that is what your fiance wants and there is someone else to be the witness for the marriage license then I don’t see anything wrong with it. If your maid-of-honor doesn’t mind, then it’s fine. Personally, I think it’s nice that he wants someone in his family to stand up for him. Too often people use friends and then later they break up with them or lose touch and years later you’re looking at wedding pictures with these virtual strangers in them.

My brother has been asked by text message to be co-best man at the wedding of his friend. What should he do.

it’s a new thing i’ve been to two weddings now where have have been 2 best men,
