Being asked to be the Best Man at a wedding is a great honor and every Best Man secretly wishes to be the Best 'Best Man' ever. Here is a primer on the duties you will be expected to perform at a typically American wedding so that you can prepare yourself for the special day.

1. Your first and foremost duty will be to plan a Bachelor Party or Stag Night for the Groom along with the other groomsmen.

2. Next, You will be expected to attend the rehearsal usually held a day or two before the wedding. A rehearsal dinner will take place immediately following the rehearsal where you will be expected to show up.

3. You will have to escort and drive the groom to all the destinations lined up for the day if a Limo is not hired. Take your instructions from the bride on where you need to drive the groom to.

4. On the Wedding day, you are required to show up early and assist the groom with whatever help he might need. You will also need to show up early to be in the pre-wedding photographs with the Groom and other groomsmen and later, drive the Groom to the church.

5. Throughout the wedding, the Best Man is expected to be helpful and friendly with the wedding guests. You could help with the seating before the ceremony.

6. When the Wedding ceremony begins, the Best Man either walks in with the groom or with the Maid/Matron of honor.

7. You may be asked to safe keep the bride's ring till the officiant asks for it during the ceremony.

8. At the end of the ceremony, you will exit with the Maid/Matron of Honor.

9. As you are required to assist the Groom in every possible way, you will have to take care of distributing the Groom's payment envelopes to the officiant, organizer, planner etc, as the Groom himself will be busy with the receiving line after the ceremony.

10. At the reception following the ceremony, you will have to toast the bride and groom. A Best Man speech is expected and looked forward to, with interest. Here lies your main concern. Prepare a witty speech with lots of sincere wishes for the newly weds.

11. If there is dancing at the Wedding, you will be expected to dance with the Maid of Honor and the Bridesmaids.

12. If there are any other activities planned by the Bride and the Groom, you will expected to participate in them.

Other miscellaneous duties of the Best Man include helping and assisting the Groom with whatever he needs, taking good care of him, helping him relax on his special day and signing the marriage license. Apart from planning the bachelor party and preparing the Wedding Speech, all your other duties will mainly consist of making the day easier for the Groom which is really what the Best Man is expected to do.
